How to get a roofing company recommended by ChatGPT (GEO for contractors)

ChatGPT recommends a roofer when it can find that company named, with the same details, on several independent sites it trusts: Google and Bing business profiles, review sites, the BBB, manufacturer directories, local news and a website that says clearly what you do and where. For local questions it searches the web live, so you get named by being easy to find and easy to verify, not by paying. One large 2026 study found ChatGPT named only about 1 to 2 percent of the local business locations it looked at, so the bar is high, but the steps to clear it are known.

How ChatGPT picks a roofer

When a homeowner asks ChatGPT 'who is the best roofer in Troy, Michigan', it runs a web search, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer that names two to five companies, usually with links. Google AI Overviews and Gemini do the same thing with Google's index and Google Business Profiles. Perplexity and Claude search live too.

So the real question is not 'does the AI like me'. It is 'when the AI searches for roofers in my town, do the pages it finds mention me, and do they agree with each other'. If your name, phone, address, services and reviews line up across five or six trusted sites, the AI can recommend you with confidence. If they conflict or are missing, it picks someone else.

Ranking on Google helps but is not enough. SOCi's 2026 analysis of more than 350,000 business locations found ChatGPT recommended about 1.2 percent of them, and only about 45 percent of the brands that did well in local search also did well in AI answers. Plenty of roofers sit in the Google Maps pack and never get named by ChatGPT.

The sources AI reads for roofers

Google Business Profile. BrightLocal's 2026 local AI study found Google Business Profile made up roughly 28 percent of all citations across the AI platforms it tested. A thin profile is the most common reason a good roofer is skipped.

Bing Places. ChatGPT search leans on Bing results. Many roofers have never claimed their Bing listing.

Review sites. Google first, then Yelp, the BBB, Angi, Houzz and Nextdoor. AI tools read the rating, the count and what the reviews say.

Manufacturer directories. GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed contractor locators are independent proof that you are certified. AI tools treat them as trusted third parties.

Local lists and news. 'Best roofers in Detroit' roundups, chamber of commerce pages, supplier pages and local news coverage after a storm.

Your own website. Service pages, city pages and plain answers to the questions homeowners ask.

Eight fixes, in order

1. Same name, address and phone everywhere. Fix old addresses, old phone numbers and duplicate listings first. Conflicting details are the fastest way to get left out.

2. Complete Google Business Profile and Bing Places. Primary category Roofing contractor, every service listed with a one-line description, service areas, hours, at least 20 real job photos, and your state license number in the description.

3. A steady flow of reviews. Ask after every finished job and reply to every review. Several 2026 studies found the businesses AI recommends averaged about 4.3 stars or better. Reviews that mention the service and the city ('replaced our roof in Rochester Hills after the hail storm') give the AI words to match.

4. One page per service and per city. Roof repair, roof replacement, storm damage, insurance claims, commercial roofing, plus a page for each city you actually work. Open each one with a two-sentence plain answer: what you do, where, and how to book.

5. Answer pages. 'How much does a roof replacement cost in Detroit', 'Does insurance cover hail damage in Michigan', 'How long does a roof last in Miami'. Whitespark's 2026 research found AI Overviews on roughly two thirds of local searches, and cost and how-to questions trigger them most.

6. Schema markup. RoofingContractor or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Review schema tell machines exactly what each page is about.

7. Let AI crawlers in. Check that robots.txt does not block Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. A surprising number of contractor sites block them by accident through a security plugin.

8. Get mentioned. Manufacturer certification listings, a supplier's 'find a contractor' page, a sponsorship page, a quote in local news after a storm. Each independent mention is one more source that agrees you exist and do good work.

Detroit and Miami examples

Metro Detroit. Ask ChatGPT for the best roof replacement company in Sterling Heights and the answer usually pulls from Google profiles, the BBB and one or two roundup articles. A roofer with 40 reviews and a single 'services' page rarely shows up next to one with 200 reviews and a page for Sterling Heights. Michigan homeowners also ask about licensing, so put your Michigan license number on the site and the profile.

Miami. A large share of searches in Hialeah, Doral and Kendall happen in Spanish. A Spanish service page and Spanish-language reviews give the AI something to cite when someone asks for 'mejor compañía de techos en Hialeah'. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so a page on storm damage inspections and the Florida license number on every profile matter more there than almost anywhere.

How long it takes and how to measure it

Profile, review and listing fixes can change AI answers within a few weeks, because the AI reads them live. New pages and new mentions usually take two to six months to be picked up and trusted.

Measure it the simple way: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same five questions every month ('best roofer in my city', 'roof replacement near me', 'who fixes storm damage in my city') and log whether you are named, in what position, and which sites they cite. Our free AI Visibility Check runs those questions for you and shows the sources. Also add 'ChatGPT or AI' as an option on your 'how did you hear about us' question so you can count the calls.

What does not work

Paying someone who promises to 'rank you in ChatGPT'. Organic answers cannot be bought.

Fake or bought reviews. The FTC rule on fake reviews took effect in October 2024 and allows civil penalties per violation. AI tools also discount sudden bursts of five-star reviews.

Hundreds of thin AI-written city pages. One useful page per real service area beats fifty copies with the city name swapped.

Questions people ask next

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in the organic answer. OpenAI has started testing ads in ChatGPT, shown separately and labeled, and says they do not change which businesses the answer recommends. Getting named comes from profiles, reviews, mentions and your website.

Does ranking on Google Maps mean ChatGPT will recommend me?

It helps, but less than most owners expect. Studies in 2026 found under half of the brands that do well in local search also do well in AI answers. Bing Places, review sites and outside mentions close the gap.

How many reviews does a roofer need to get recommended?

There is no fixed number. Aim to beat the review count and rating of the top three roofers in your city, keep the rating above about 4.3 stars, and keep new reviews coming every month.

Does this work for other trades?

Yes. HVAC, plumbing, paving, concrete and remodeling companies get picked the same way. Only the directories change: trade associations and manufacturer locators for your trade instead of roofing ones.
