How much does a marketing agency cost in Metro Detroit?

Most Metro Detroit marketing agencies charge a monthly fee plus your ad spend. Published listings for Detroit and Ann Arbor agencies show starting budgets from about $1,000 to $10,000, and a 2026 Detroit agency roundup puts small business retainers at around $3,000 a month and mid-size programs at $10,000 or more. What you pay depends on how many channels you need, whether content and video are included, and how competitive your industry is. Always ask for the agency fee and the ad spend as two separate lines.

The short version

There is no standard price, but the public numbers line up fairly well. Here is what we found in November 2026.

Semrush's agency directory lists Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor agencies with starting budgets from about $1,000 to $2,500 for smaller shops and from $5,000 to $10,000 for larger ones.

Clutch's list of Detroit digital marketing agencies shows minimum project sizes from $1,000 up to $250,000, with most hourly rates between $50 and $200 and a few higher.

A 2026 roundup of Detroit agencies says small business retainers often start around $3,000 a month and mid-market programs reach $10,000 or more.

Those numbers are what agencies charge for their own work. Your ad spend on Google, Meta or Local Services Ads comes on top.

How agencies charge

Monthly retainer: a flat fee for ongoing work like ad management, SEO, content and reporting. This is the most common setup for local businesses.

Percent of ad spend: common for paid ads management. 2026 pricing guides put it at about 10 to 20 percent of monthly ad spend, usually with a minimum fee, and the percentage tends to drop as spend grows.

Project fees: for one-time builds like a website, a CRM setup or a brand refresh. A 2026 Clutch survey found about 6 in 10 small business buyers spent under $10,000 on their most recent website.

Hourly: for consulting, audits and small jobs.

Typical price ranges by service

SEO: an Ahrefs survey of SEO providers found $501 to $1,000 a month was the most common retainer across freelancers, consultants and agencies, with agency retainers averaging about $3,200 a month. Local SEO for one location sits at the lower end. Several locations or a competitive trade costs more.

Google and Meta ads management: about 10 to 20 percent of ad spend, or a flat fee that pricing guides commonly put around $1,000 to $3,000 a month for a small business.

Websites: under $10,000 for most small business projects, with larger custom builds running higher.

CRM and follow-up software: GoHighLevel, for example, lists plans starting around $97 a month, plus the setup work.

Video and content: priced per shoot or bundled into a retainer. On-site shoots cost more than editing footage you send in, but job site video is often what makes the ads work.

What changes the price in Metro Detroit

The number of channels. One channel done well, for example Google Local Services Ads with fast follow-up, costs far less than ads, SEO, video and a new website all at once.

Your service area. A plumber who covers Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties needs more pages, more listings and more ad budget than one who works three suburbs.

Competition. Clicks for legal, mortgage, roofing and HVAC searches cost more than most, so those businesses need more ad spend for the same number of leads.

The season. Michigan contractors often raise budgets before furnace season or spring and lower them in slow months, so the monthly total can move through the year. Our winter marketing guide for Michigan contractors shows how that plays out.

What to ask before you sign

Ask for the agency fee and the ad spend on separate lines, and confirm the ad spend is billed to your own card or account. Ask who owns the ad accounts, the website, the domain and the CRM data if you part ways. Ask what gets reported every month: you want leads, booked appointments and cost per booked job, not just clicks and impressions.

Ask how the agreement is set up and how it ends. Good agencies tailor the scope, timeline and budget to your business and put the exit terms in writing. Our guides on who owns the ad account and on agency contracts cover the questions in detail.

How to set a budget

Start from what a customer is worth to you. If a new roof brings you $4,000 in profit, paying a few hundred dollars per signed job is a good deal. If a job is worth $150, the math is very different.

Then start with one channel and fast follow-up, prove your cost per booked job over 60 to 90 days, and add the next channel once the first one pays. Many growing contractors end up spending 5 to 10 percent of revenue on marketing, but they earn their way there. Our guide on what a $2,000 a month budget buys a contractor shows a starting plan.

Questions people ask next

Is a Detroit agency more expensive than a national one?

Not necessarily. Listings show both local and national agencies across the whole price range. Compare scope, who does the work and what gets reported, not just the monthly number.

Does the agency fee include ad spend?

It should not. Ask for two lines, the agency fee and the ad spend, with the ad spend billed to your own account so you can see every dollar.

Do agencies charge setup fees?

Many do, for building campaigns, websites, tracking and CRM automations. Ask for the setup cost in writing and what you keep if you leave.

What is a fair price for local SEO in Detroit?

Survey data puts the most common SEO retainer at $501 to $1,000 a month across all providers, with agencies averaging higher. A single-location contractor usually sits at the lower end, while several locations or a competitive trade cost more.
